Hibiscus and Mint Tea

by Marianne Navada

When I found out about the benefits of hibiscus, I knew I had to create a drink that my husband and I love. This hibiscus mint tea has a tart taste. For 18 cups, I added 1 1/2 cups of sugar, but you can always modify to taste. I’ve tried different levels of intensity, and this recipe hits the spot for us. Photos of hibiscus always have that red glow—and yes, this look good, but I find that it’s not strong enough, so this one looks like red wine.

Hibiscus has tons of benefits, from lowering high blood pressure to reducing bad cholesterol and supporting cardiovascular health. It’s also rich in antioxidants and promotes liver health. Professionals do recommend consulting your doctor before drinking hibiscus tea regularly with blood pressure meditation.

I also like that hibiscus tea is caffeine-free. I tend to make coffee when I find myself working at night and just need something tasty to drink. This hibiscus mint tea works as a great replacement for those moments.

To store, I use 1 pitcher and also 8 glass drinking bottles with lids and refrigerate. It has the feel of store-bought drinks without the price.

You can buy bulk organic hibiscus flowers on Amazon. Currently, I buy Anthony’s brand.

Ingredients

  • 18 cups water
  • 2 cups hibiscus tea
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 3 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 cups fresh mint leaves (washed)

Instructions

  1. Add all the ingredients and bring the water to a boil 200°F. When it reaches boiling point, turn off flame and let the tea steep for 10-12 minutes. Steeping for too long can add a bitter taste.
  2. Let it cool and transfer to bottles or pitchers with covers. Refrigerate.
